On Wednesday afternoons, Emmett and his father head downtown to a local restaurant where they've become regulars, and each week a colorful pile of wax crayons will be waiting at seven-year-old Emmett's seat. The first grader has already gained a reputation for his artistic talent among the regulars and he spends the afternoon sitting at the bar with his father Maurizio coloring and talking to friends they meet there. As a child he would venture to a local shop where he would be treated to gelato. He recalls the feeling of being part of a strong community that he says is sometimes absent from life in America where he has lived since he turned 10.
For many Americans, Maurizio says, life centers on their job. Family comes a distant second to the nine-to-five responsibilities. While many employers will say that they value the family life of their employees—the words rarely ring true in practice.
